Solar power has become one of the best options that we have for managing the resources that we have carefully, so that the environment remains clean and healthy for future generations. When you want to generate solar power, you will need some basic materials to get started. You can often build your solar power system yourself, or you can invest in a commercial solar power system.

Portable Solar Panels

Even though you may consider portable solar power panels to be an insignificant source of power, they are wonderful to use when you want to generate solar power for a small appliance. Plus, they are self contained, so you won’t need any additional source of power for your portable solar panel. If you are looking for a larger, more powerful solar power system, then you will need to have an inverter and batteries set up to collect, convert and store your solar power for you.

Rooftop Solar Panels

Rooftop solar panels are a very traditional way to generate solar power for your home. You can either install these yourself, or you can have a professional do it for you. The main difference here is the cost, since commercial systems are so much more expensive than do it yourself solar systems. You can also choose between photo voltaic and solar-thermal types of systems. Photovoltaic, or PV, systems are less common that thermal types of solar energy systems.

Types of Solar Energy Systems

PV solar systems generate solar power by inducing a chemical reaction that in turn creates electricity. These chemical reactions occur within the cells of the solar panel, and are then inverted and stored in a battery until it is used in your home.

Solar-thermal energy is the main type of energy that you will see used today. Business and homes can generate solar power by trapping the heat of the sun in a solar panel, and then transforming that heat into steam that runs into the solar generator, which then is converted into useable energy for your home. Some commercial systems use solar thermal energy, which use reflectors to create the energy needed to run generators or turbines.

Switching To Solar

When you begin to generate solar power for your home, you will need several solar panels that trap the sun’s energy, along with an inverter and a few other tools. What you need will be determined by whether you are on or off the main electrical grid in your area, since some tools will be needed to integrate your solar power into the main electrical system in your home.

If you have chosen generate solar power in addition to using a traditional energy source, and then you will need to connect your solar system to your main power source after it is converted to useable household energy. You can easily find a diagram online to show you exactly what you need, and where in your plans it will fit in. It makes good sense to use a backup power source, at least until you can generate enough solar power for your home.
